About this collection

Many in the 21st century are unaware that there was once a railway running up the slope of Monte Sano or that a hotel which was looked upon as a health resort was very profitable for a number of years in the late 1800's. Before it was viewed primarily as a site for hiking trails and the state park in its center the hotel housed many prominent guests including William H. Vanderbilt, Viscount William Waldorf Astor and Jay Gould.

This collection is comprised mainly of images from the years in which the hotel and railway were profitable and covers a time period from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
