Description |
Final destination for the railway up at the mountain top was the Monte Sano Hotel which featured breathtaking views of the City of Huntsville found below. The Monte Sano line had three passenger cars pulled by a 2 ton Baldwin engine. The three coaches were designed by Arthur Wilson who was the Overseer hired the North Alabama Improvement Company, and were built by the St. Charles Company of Missouri. The coaches were 42’ long, shorter than a normal coach (which was 50 to 60’ in length). One car had three compartments: a refrigerated unit with ice for bringing fresh meats and produce to the Hotel, a baggage compartment, and the third compartment was for smoking. The passengers were transported to the Hotel by a horse drawn-Talifero. |
